Our Programming

We have designed an inviting, child-centered learning environment that encourages independent investigation and builds skills and knowledge. Our teachers act as facilitators, following the individual children and guiding them through the curriculum based on their interests and developmental stages. This active rather than passive approach to learning allows for reflection and self correction.

  • Practical Life

The Practical Life area of the classroom consists of learning activities that promote movement, encourage independence, develop fine and gross motor skills and increase concentration.

Through caring for one’s self and the environment, the children develop a sense of order and sequence logical steps as they engage in meaningful experiences and refine their senses.

  • Language

The sensitive period of development for language is from birth to age six. During this time, the child absorbs language with the greatest ease and begins to construct her understanding of herself and the world around her. Language is the primary vehicle for all learning and happens through everyday interactions.

Oral Language includes listening: receptive-receiving and constructing meaning and speaking: expressive-creating and sharing meaning. Visual Language includes reading, writing and presenting.

  • Mathematics

The mathematical mind describes a concept of logical thinking, abstraction, order, exactness, repetition and creative problem-solving that goes beyond the classroom and is a natural process ignited by the child’s curiosity.

The concrete materials in the classroom facilitate the refinement of senses and the repetition of activities perfect the sense of order, numeracy, shape & space, and measurement.

  • Science

The Science curriculum at Maitri Montessori is modeled on the Primary Years Program of the International Bachelorette and is highly process oriented. It is arranged by: living things; earth and space; materials and matter; and forces and energy. The children will engage in age appropriate activities encouraging the exploration of form, function, change, causation, connection and perspective.

The learning experiences that we have designed promote observation skills and include: gardening, cooking, food and nutrition, and caring for animals.

  • Social Studies

    Social Studies

Social Studies begins with the study of “who we are” affirming the identity, culture, traditions and heritage of each child and discovering their personal history.

We explore our similarities and differences and share our feelings and ideas with one another. Children are introduced to: different feelings/emotions and how to share them with others; exploring family heritage; creating inclusive rituals and engaging with local community.

  • Music & Movement

Embedded into our daily routine and circle time, the children will learn songs and finger- plays, be introduced to rhythm instruments and different kinds of music. They will learn how to move their bodies to the music and see how they can express themselves through song and dance.

Children will have the opportunity to sing new songs, listen to a variety of music, dance to the rhythm and learn how to play different instruments.

  • Art

Maitri Montessori is an art enriched classroom with original pieces of artwork from around the world. The art area encourages creativity and is process oriented rather than product focused. The children are presented with skill focused lessons including: paper tearing, cutting, coloring, painting, gluing, and construction.

  • Creative Play

Applying skills and concepts creatively to new situations and play scenarios is an important part of early childhood education. At Maitri Montessori, there are plenty of opportunities for role play and dress up, block building and outdoor play.

Our Space

Maitri Montessori is a small neighborhood school that leverages a fully converted craftsman house to create an intimate, comprehensive learning environment for a select number of students. Each room is carefully designed to facilitate the growth and development of children depending on their unique needs. Here are a few photographs of our school. We encourage you to schedule a tour to get a feel for what what we can offer you and your child!
